Can I use my set?

Can I use this mahjong set for my rules?

Start with the rules your group names. Then compare the tile groups and check the exact faces and accessories your table expects.

The short answer

A tile count can narrow the question, but it cannot identify every rules variant. Use a named rules reference and ask the host before treating one set as a match.

Compare the tile groups.

Three named reference inventories
Rules referenceSuit tilesWindsDragonsFlowersJokersTotalWhat to confirm
American Mah Jongg108161288152Current NMJL card or the group’s stated house rules.
Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR)108161280144Use the MCR rules reference; “Chinese” alone does not name a ruleset.
EMA Riichi rules108161200136The 2025 EMA reference does not use red fives; confirm any house variation with the group.

These are three specific rule references. Other Chinese or Riichi variants may use different tiles, extras, or table conventions.

Enter a set’s counts in the tile count checker. It compares categories with these baselines; it does not identify markings or validate every house rule.

What would you add or set aside?

These changes match the three inventories above. They apply only when the other tile groups and faces match the named rules reference.

Tile changes between the named reference inventories
Starting setTarget rulesTile change
AmericanMCRSet aside 8 jokers; keep the 8 flowers.

Ask the host before changing a set. Matching counts do not guarantee that a tile’s face or marking suits the table.

Can a Chinese set work for American play?

A 144-tile set with 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, and 8 flowers has the same first four groups as the American reference, but it has no jokers. American play’s standard inventory includes 8 jokers. Confirm the count and faces with the host before adding or marking tiles.

For the step-by-step check, see using a Chinese set for American mahjong.

Check accessories after the rules.

A correct tile count does not show whether the box includes racks, pushers, dice, scoring pieces, storage, or the reference material your group uses. Read the exact contents list and ask what players already have.

For tile and rack dimensions, use the rack fit calculator. For a mat, enter its full size and the table’s usable surface in the mat fit calculator.

Check a named store set.

These pages compare published listing details and cited owner reports for a specific set or model group. They do not claim a physical fit test: Costco, Sam’s Club, Hobby Lobby, Target / Spin Master, and Yellow Mountain Imports.
