Rules

Ask what the group plays.

American, Chinese variants, and Riichi can create different expectations for tiles, markings, accessories, and reference material.

Contents

Count the exact box.

Separate tiles, racks, pushers, dice, scoring pieces, storage, and rules resources. A tile count does not describe the whole setup.

Table

Measure usable space.

The outside dimensions of a table or mat can hide raised edges, overhang, and the room needed for four players.

Before game night

A short first-night checklist.

  1. Ask which rules the group plays. Use the set compatibility guide if the name or tile count is unclear.
  2. Read the exact box contents. Count tiles by group with the tile count checker; list racks, pushers, dice, storage, and reference material separately.
  3. Check tile and rack length. Compare the tile face width with the usable rack ledge in the rack fit calculator.
  4. Measure the table and mat. Use the mat fit calculator, then check space for four racks and chairs.
  5. For American play, confirm the current card. Use the NMJL card guide and ask the host what else is already on hand.

How to set up a mahjong board (first night)

Short answer: To set up a mahjong board for a first-night game, confirm the rules variant, deal the tiles using that variant's opening procedure, build the walls, place the racks or pushers, put the NMJL card within reach for American Mah Jongg, and clear the table or mat for tiles, cards, racks, and seats. If you are still shopping, check the exact set contents and measure the usable table before ordering.

  1. Confirm the rules variant. Ask whether the group plays American, a Chinese variant, or Riichi. The rules determine the opening procedure and reference material. Use the set compatibility guide if the label is unclear.
  2. Deal the tiles. Use the opening deal for that variant, including its starting hand and draw procedure. For American mahjong, East starts with 14 tiles and everyone else with 13.
  3. Build the walls. Use that variant's wall layout, starting point, and break procedure. For American play, each wall is 19 tiles long and two high.
  4. Place the racks or pushers. Put one at each playing position before players sort their hands. Check the box contents first, because a set can include tiles without the racks or pushers your group expects.
  5. Place the NMJL card for American play. If the group plays NMJL-style American Mah Jongg, put the current card where everyone can read it without taking up a rack or discard area. The official NMJL card guide explains where to get the card and how to choose the edition; Chinese and Riichi tables use different references.
  6. Clear the table and mat. Leave usable space for the walls, racks, card, discards, and chairs. The mahjong mat fit calculator checks the footprint, but a pass does not guarantee room for four players.

A useful rule of thumb

Compare the full footprint, not one number.

A square mat on a round table is limited by its diagonal, so its side length alone can make it look smaller than the table can support. The same principle applies to equipment: compare the usable surface and included pieces, not just a product title.
