Can I use my set?

Does my mahjong set have the right tile count?

Count each tile group and compare it with a named rules reference. A box total alone cannot tell you which tiles are inside.

Tile count checkerReviewed 13 October 2026

Choose the rules before comparing counts.

An American set, a Mahjong Competition Rules set, and an EMA Riichi set use different reference totals. This checker compares five groups; it does not identify a set from its box total.

Enter the pieces you counted.

Count the physical tiles in the set. Keep spares outside the counts unless they are part of the listed group.

Dots, bams, and craks.

What a matching count does not prove.

The count does not check tile faces, red fives, duplicate or replacement tiles, damage, or whether the group uses a house variation. Ask the host which rules they follow and compare the markings with that rules source.

If your set has a 144-tile Chinese configuration and you want to play American, use the Chinese set conversion guide. If you need to check rack length, use the rack fit calculator.

Reference inventories.

These are named rule references, not a universal count for every game called Chinese or Riichi. Sources checked 13 October 2026.
