Can I use my set?

Can I use a Chinese mahjong set for American play?

Often, a 144-tile set has most of the tiles needed. Check the exact groups, jokers, markings, racks, and the rules your table uses before relying on it.

Check the tile groups, then the table setup.

The American reference inventory is 152 tiles: 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers, and 8 jokers. A 144-tile set with the same first four groups is short eight jokers.

The label “Chinese set” does not identify one configuration. Count the pieces in your box and ask the host whether its faces work for the group’s American rules.

Use this conversion check.

  1. Count each group. Use the tile count checker to compare suits, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers. Keep spares separate.
  2. Confirm the flowers. A 144-tile set under the MCR reference includes eight flower tiles. Compare their faces and count with the group’s rules.
  3. Check for eight distinct jokers. In one r/Mahjong discussion, a player described putting joker stickers on blank tiles. Agree on clear markings with your group before using blanks this way.
  4. Check the accessories your table uses. The American equipment guide lists a rack for each player, dice, and a current NMJL card. Compare that list with your box and ask what the group already has.

The tile counts follow the American Mah Jongg Association inventory and the World Mahjong Organization’s 2013 MCR rules. The sticker example is one owner’s approach, not a rules requirement.

Tiles are only one part of the set.

Before game night, check which racks, dice, and current American card the group expects. A mat is optional; compare its full footprint with the usable table before buying.

Use the rack fit calculator if the tiles and racks are different sizes. Use the mat fit calculator to compare a mat with a round or rectangular table. The set compatibility guide covers other named rules references.
