Should you buy a set tonight?
Buy a complete American set only if your group plays American mahjong and you do not already have tiles, racks, and a bag that work. If the host already owns a set, you probably don't need another one—bring a current NMJL card instead. If the group plays Chinese or Riichi rules, skip the American kits below and start with the variant comparison.
When you do need a first set, pick one complete listing that names the playing tiles, racks or pushers, and storage. A 166-piece headline often includes spares; the playable American wall is still 152. Add a mat only after the mat-size worksheet. Upgrade racks only after you compare tile width with the usable ledge.
Choose the missing piece
- First American kit: compare the American complete sets and confirm the selected child’s tile composition, racks/pushers, and bag.
- Chinese or numbered play: compare the Chinese sets after the host names the rules.
- Japanese Riichi: use the Riichi set section only after the group confirms the variant.
- Rack replacement or large tiles: check racks and pushers against the usable ledge; compare large tiles and longer racks separately.
- Travel, mat, or replacement tiles: browse travel sets, or measure first with the mat worksheet and check tiles only if your racks already work.
Check a named mahjong set.
These guides compare listing dimensions and contents with what each page states. They do not report hands-on fit tests: Costco, Sam’s Club, Hobby Lobby, Target / Spin Master, and Yellow Mountain Imports.
For your own tiles and racks, use the rack fit calculator and the tile count checker.
Why listings say 152, 160, or 166 tiles
American mahjong is played with 152 tiles. So why do so many listings say 166? Retail sets count every piece in the box: a common 166-piece configuration is 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 16 flowers and seasons, 10 jokers, and 4 blank replacement tiles. That is the 152 you play with, plus spares and extras.
A 160- or 152-piece listing can be equally complete if it names the same playing pieces with fewer spares. The number that matters is the composition, not the headline count. For the standard 152-tile inventory by category, use the tile count checker. Before ordering any American set, confirm on the listing:
- Jokers: at least 8; more is fine because jokers are the pieces most likely to go missing.
- Flowers: 8 flowers or seasons.
- Equipment: whether racks and pushers are included, and whether they are all-in-one or separate.
- Extras: a case or bag, dice, and a wind indicator if your group wants the full setup.
The American Mah Jongg Association tile reference documents the 152-tile standard, 8 flowers, and 8 jokers. The 166-piece retail composition is from a dated sourcing reference, checked September 16, 2026. Retail contents can change, so verify the current listing at order time.
Are acrylic or melamine mahjong tiles better?
Neither material wins on every table. Melamine tiles are usually heavier and denser; acrylic-style tiles are often lighter with a sharper click. Confirm the listing actually names the material you think you are buying.
| Factor | Melamine tiles (when named on the listing) | Acrylic-style tiles (typical white American kits) |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Usually heavier per tile; a full set can feel denser in the bag. | Often lighter; easier to carry but easier to knock. |
| Sound | Lower, more muted clicks on wood or a mat. | Brighter clicks; some groups like it, some find it sharp. |
| Durability | Hard composite body; chips are possible on corners from drops. | Can crack if stepped on; day-to-day play is usually fine. |
| Engraving and paint wear | Engraving sits in a dense body; faces still wear with heavy use. | Paint or foil on the face can show wear faster on high-touch tiles. |
| Price | Often appears on mid-tier and premium named sets; compare live listings. | Common in complete beginner kits; compare live listings. |
On this page, melamine is explicit in titles such as the Huntington American set, AzulHome large melamine tiles, Harbor Tide melamine tiles-only set, and the Mose Cafolo Chinese melamine set. Most other American complete sets here title their tiles as white or premium without naming melamine or acrylic; treat the material as unconfirmed until the listing states it. Examples to compare: GUSTARIA, Jongyance, and Linda Li.
We have not weighed or sound-tested these pairings side by side. Use buyer photos and your host’s preference before you treat material as the deciding factor.
What size mahjong racks do I need for large tiles?
Start with 20-inch racks when your tiles are noticeably larger than a standard American set. Multiply seller-stated tile width by 19 for the wall length, then compare that number with the rack’s usable inside ledge, not the outside length printed in the title.
The large tiles and 20-inch racks section lists longer racks beside large-format tiles. A 1.4-inch-tall tile can still measure about 1.06 inches wide; nineteen of those tiles span roughly 20.1 inches on paper, which is why the AzulHome listing warns against 20-inch-or-shorter racks. The same arithmetic applies to any large tile: open the listing dimensions, multiply width by 19, and only then compare 20-inch acrylic racks, 20-inch BLBYHO racks, or 20-inch wooden racks.
Standard 17-inch racks can be shorter than a row of 19 one-inch tiles. Compare the tile face width with the usable ledge in the rack fit calculator before choosing a rack.
First-time American set chooser
Lead with the rules, then kit vs tiles, then an honest buy or skip. The questions below sit next to the decision; detailed guides keep the long answers.
Which rules does your group play?
| You need | Start here | Buy or skip |
|---|---|---|
| First home set | American complete sets | Buy one complete listing that names tiles, racks/pushers, and a bag or case. Skip extras until after the first night. |
| Tiles only | Tiles-only sets | Buy only if racks, pushers, and storage already work. Otherwise you still need a kit. |
| Host already has a set | NMJL card guide | You probably don't need another set. Get a current card each player can read. |
| Question | What we can say today | What to check on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| What can I read comfortably at a table? | Unknown for ranked comparison. We have not run a same-distance readability test or taken original face photos. A "large print" title is not evidence. | Seller-stated tile height/width and buyer photos at table distance. For card print size, use the NMJL card guide. |
| Will glossy tiles glare under the room's lights? | Unknown. No same-light glare test or original photos for these listings. | Look at buyer photos under overhead light, not only the hero shot. Seating angle and a mat often matter as much as tile finish. |
| How heavy is the packed set to carry? | Unknown unless the seller published a weight. We did not weigh any set. Heavier is not automatically higher quality. | Case or shipping weight on the listing, whether racks sit inside the case, and how you will carry it. |
| What exactly comes in the set, and what remains to buy? | Use the composition checklist above and each card's stated contents. A kit does not automatically include an NMJL card. | Tile breakdown, racks/pushers, dice, wind indicator, chips, bag/case. Still buy: current NMJL cards for American play; a mat only after the mat worksheet. Inventory: the first-night checklist. |
| Will my tiles fit the usable rack ledge? | On-paper only. Multiply seller-stated tile width by 19 and compare it with the rack's usable inside ledge, not its outside length. A calculation cannot confirm an unmeasured pairing. | Open racks or large tiles and 20-inch racks, then enter your dimensions in the rack fit calculator. |
Match the purchase to the job
If this is your first American setup, begin with one complete listing that passes the composition check. Use the rows below when your game or the missing piece is different.
| Your situation | Start here | One check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| First American setup | American complete sets | Confirm the listing names the tile count, racks, pushers, and storage you need. |
| Chinese or numbered game | Chinese and numbered sets | Ask the host which named rules and tile markings the table uses. |
| Rack replacement | Racks and pushers | Measure the tiles and usable ledge before relying on a photograph. |
| Large tiles or longer racks | Large tiles and 20-inch racks | Multiply your tile width by 19 and compare with the usable ledge. |
| Mat purchase | Mat-fit worksheet | Check the full footprint against the usable table, including edge reserve. |
| Travel setup | Travel sets | Compare packed size, scale, player count, and included pieces with the trip. |
| Japanese Riichi game | Riichi set | Confirm the group plays Riichi before using a variant-specific set. |
| Replacement tiles | Tiles-only sets | Make sure compatible racks, pushers, storage, and accessories are already covered. |
Listing titles rechecked 2026-09-30. Tile sizes, rack lengths, and kit contents below are seller-stated unless noted. No physical fit, glare, readability, or packed-weight tests were done for this update.

American complete set · 166 tiles
GUSTARIA American Mahjong Game Set, 166 Quality White Tiles, 4 All-in-One Color Rack/Pushers, Mahjong Tile Set with Blue Printed Carrying Bag
Best for: A first American setup when you want tiles, four all-in-one rack/pushers, and a carrying bag named in one listing.
Why it fits: The title identifies 166 white tiles and those core kit pieces, making it a clear complete-set starting point to check.
Tradeoff / skip if: Skip if your host already has a usable set, your group plays another variant, or you need verified readability, rack fit, or box composition before buying. The 166 headline alone does not confirm the playable tile breakdown or that an NMJL card is included.
Exact listing / child checks: Open the selected child and confirm it still names 166 white tiles, four all-in-one rack/pushers, and the blue printed bag. Check the tile breakdown (including flowers and jokers) and inspect the bag and rack details; rack fit and tile readability have not been checked on a physical set.
Next step: If the selected child passes those checks and suits your table, use the listing link. Otherwise compare another complete set or keep the set you already have.
American complete set · 166 tiles
Jongyance American Mahjong Tile Set with Carrying Bag, 166 White Tiles, 4 Racks with Pushers, Mahjong Set for Beginners
Best for: A first American set when a white-tile kit with four racks, pushers, and a carrying bag matches what you need.
Why it fits: Those items and the 166-tile headline are named in this listing title, so you can check the core kit in one place.
Tradeoff / skip if: Skip if you already have a working set, play a different variant, or need confirmed composition, legibility, or tile-to-rack fit before ordering. The headline count does not establish the exact playable breakdown or card inclusion.
Exact listing / child checks: Confirm the selected child still lists 166 white tiles, four racks with pushers, and the carrying bag. Check flowers, jokers, and the selected variation’s contents before ordering; rack fit and tile readability have not been checked on a physical set.
Next step: Follow the listing only if those checks match your needs; otherwise compare the other American complete sets or buy nothing.
American complete set · premium bag
Linda Li New! - American Mahjong Set 166 Premium White Tiles, 4 All-in-One Rack/Pushers, Blue Paisley Soft Bag - Classic Full Size Complete Mahjongg Set
Best for: A player who wants the title-described 166 premium white tiles, four all-in-one rack/pushers, and a blue paisley soft bag.
Why it fits: The listing names a full-size American set and identifies the bag and rack style for a direct contents check.
Tradeoff / skip if: Skip if you do not want a soft bag or all-in-one racks, your group plays another variant, or you need verified tile readability, rack fit, or complete tile composition before buying. The title does not establish NMJL card inclusion.
Exact listing / child checks: Confirm the selected child retains the 166-tile title, four all-in-one rack/pushers, and blue paisley soft bag. Check flowers, jokers, and the contents of that child before ordering; rack fit and tile readability have not been checked on a physical set.
Next step: Use the listing link only if the selected child and contents suit your group; otherwise compare another complete set or keep what you own.
American complete set · Harbor Tide
Yellow Mountain Imports American Mahjong Set, Harbor Tide with Beige and Blue Canvas Tote Bag - 4 All-in-One Racks with Pushers, Wright Patterson Scoring Coins, Dice, & Wind Indicator
Best for: A shopper seeking the title-described Harbor Tide set with a canvas tote, four all-in-one rack/pushers, scoring coins, dice, and wind indicator.
Why it fits: The listing names the tote and accessory bundle, which gives you specific contents to verify before choosing it.
Tradeoff / skip if: Skip if you do not need the tote or listed accessories, need an explicitly stated tile count and breakdown before buying, or require verified rack fit/readability. The title does not state the tile count.
Exact listing / child checks: Confirm the selected child’s tile count and breakdown (including flowers and jokers), four all-in-one rack/pushers, canvas tote, scoring coins, dice, and wind indicator. Do not infer unspecified contents from another variation. Rack fit and tile readability have not been checked on a physical set.
Next step: Follow the listing only if that child confirms the pieces your group needs; otherwise compare a set with a clearer stated composition or skip the purchase.

Check the usable length
Your wall is 19 tiles long. Multiply seller-stated tile width by 19 and compare it to the rack's usable inside ledge, not its listed outside length. Those listing numbers are rounded; we have not measured these pairings. Racks listed at 17.3-17.5 inches with 0.9-inch tiles leave little room on paper.
This should fit but it'll be tight. We cannot guarantee fit.
Use the rack fit calculator for the measurement method and its limits. It compares your dimensions on paper; it does not certify a product pairing.

Which set fits the way you play?
Use the existing equipment lanes for the job you actually need. These are filters, not rankings. The check in the last column is the detail to confirm before ordering.
| If this is your situation | Start with | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner or value setup | A complete American set with racks, pushers, and a bag | Use the composition checklist above, not the product photo. |
| Travel | A mini or compact set | Compare packed size and tile scale. A travel set is for travel, not automatically a cheaper home set. |
| Large print or accessibility | Buyer questions on readability and large tiles | We have not ranked readability. Check seller-stated tile size, buyer photos, and rack usable ledge. Larger tiles need longer racks. |
| Premium or design-led replacement | Tiles-only sets from named makers | These are replacement tiles, not complete kits. Racks, pushers, and storage remain separate. |

Common equipment questions
Should I buy an American mahjong set if the host already has one?
Usually no. Bring a current NMJL card instead of another full set unless you need a travel or home backup.
Should I buy a complete kit or tiles only?
Buy a complete kit for a first home set. Buy tiles only when compatible racks, pushers, and storage already work.
Can MahjongSetup rank which tiles are most readable or least glossy?
Not yet. Readability and glare comparisons need a same-distance, same-light test with original photos. Until then, inspect seller-stated sizes and buyer photos, and treat rankings as unknown.
What is in a common 166-piece American mahjong box?
American mahjong is played with 152 tiles. Retail sets often count every piece in the box: a common 166-piece configuration is 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 16 flowers and seasons, 10 jokers, and 4 blank replacement tiles. That is the 152 you play with, plus spares and extras.
Will these tiles fit these racks?
Only if the rack's usable inside ledge is longer than 19 of your tiles side by side. Seller-stated outside length is not enough. Without physical measurements, fit is unverified. For marginal on-paper pairings: This should fit but it’ll be tight. We cannot guarantee fit.
