Table fit guide

What size table do I need for American mahjong?

You need a flat square playing surface, room for four racks and chairs, and enough walk-around space that nobody bumps the wall when they stand up.

What size table do I need for American mahjong?

Plan for about a 36-inch square playing surface so four racks, the center discard area, and each player’s tiles fit without crowding. Many folding card tables are a little smaller; they can still work with a 33-inch mat if you test the layout with your real equipment.

The American Mah Jongg Association equipment guide recommends a 36″ × 36″ table for tiles, racks, and each player’s space. That is a target for the flat area tiles sit on, not the outside edge of a rim or tablecloth.

Square table or round table?

American play arranges four two-high tile walls into a square, so a square tabletop follows the layout. A round dining table can also work when each player has room for a rack and the center area.

Measure the usable playing surface rather than relying on the outside measurement. Check the mat separately with the mahjong mat fit calculator.

Card table vs dedicated mahjong table

A 34-inch folding table is smaller than the American Mah Jongg Association’s 36 × 36-inch recommendation. A 34-inch model is one option, but check the usable top and your group’s layout before choosing it.

A dedicated mahjong table is another option. Compare its manufacturer-listed playing surface with the layout you need before choosing it.

Product listings may give overall or nominal dimensions. Check the actual flat playing area, especially when the tabletop has rounded corners or a raised edge.

Room for four chairs

Check the table and the floor around it. Each player needs a place for a rack and room to move a chair without blocking a doorway.

There is no single room measurement that fits every chair and layout. Set four chairs where they will go, pull them back as players would, and check the paths behind them.

Check the surface, then check the seats. A table can measure correctly on paper while chairs still feel cramped.
  • Mark the playing square. Tape or paper shows the mat or bare tabletop area you expect to use.
  • Set four chairs. Pull them out as you would mid-game and walk the paths behind them.
  • Place real racks. Build a short wall on each rack with your tiles and leave discard space in the center.

Place the equipment before deciding

Set a rack at each seat and leave room for the walls and center discards. Then check the mat as a separate measurement: the mat-fit calculator compares its full footprint with the usable tabletop.

Table size questions

Is a 34-inch card table big enough for American mahjong?

It has less tabletop area than the American Mah Jongg Association’s 36-inch-square recommendation. Whether it works depends on the actual usable surface and how your racks and tiles fit; check your setup before choosing.

Does a round table work for mahjong?

It can if each player has room for a rack and the center layout. Check the usable tabletop and chair area, then use the mat-fit calculator for the separate mat footprint check.

Do I need a dedicated mahjong table?

No. A folding card table or dining table can work if the playing surface and room around the chairs fit your setup.

Measure before you buy

Record the usable playing surface, run the mat worksheet, and walk the chair layout. If anything fails, change the table, mat, or rack length before ordering.

The American Mah Jongg Association rules describe the four tile walls arranged in a square; its equipment guide recommends a 36 × 36-inch table. The 34 × 34-inch folding-table example is from Costway’s published dimensions. Checked 12 October 2026.
