The short answer
If your group plays NMJL-style American Mah Jongg, start with the National Mah Jongg League's own store. Buy the year your table is using, choose the print size you can read comfortably, and skip listings that do not clearly show the publisher, year, size, and quantity.
Check the current card at the official NMJL store
Before ordering, confirm the year, compare formats, and check how many cards your group needs.
Do you need an NMJL card to play?
You need the card if your group plays by the National Mah Jongg League's current hands and rules. You do not need it for every form of mahjong.
Ask the host one question before buying: "Are we using the current NMJL card?" If the group plays Chinese mahjong, Riichi, or another rules family, use the reference that group expects instead. Buying an NMJL card will not make the rest of a set compatible with those rules.
Which year's NMJL card should you buy?
Buy the year your table is actually using. For most active NMJL groups, that means the current card. If you are joining a class, club, or vacation game, ask before ordering because a group may be finishing a season on the prior card.
The card changes annually, so the year is not a cosmetic detail. Check the year in the product title and again in the order summary. Do not rely on a product photo alone.
Skip the purchase for now if: you do not know the rules family, the host has not confirmed the year, or the listing hides the year.
Standard or large print: which NMJL card should you get?
Choose the size you can scan quickly during a game. The official store currently lists standard and large-print cards, and it also shows a larger Mega Card format. Check the live store before ordering because formats and availability can change.
| Choose | It makes sense when | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | You are comfortable with smaller type and want the more compact card. | Confirm the current folded dimensions on the official listing. |
| Large print | You want larger type and have room for a wider card at your seat. | Make sure it will sit beside your rack without crowding the discard area. |
| Mega Card | You want a much larger reference and the current store still offers it. | Read the current format and shipping details. Do not assume it works like the folding cards. |
The hands do not become easier because the card is larger. This is a readability and table-space choice.
Where should the NMJL card go on the table?
Put the card where you can read it without covering your rack, crowding the discard area, or leaning across another player's space. There is no single table position that works for every setup, so place the actual racks and card before the game starts.
For a first night:
- Give each player a clear rack and discard area.
- Put the card beside the rack rather than behind the wall of tiles.
- Check that overhead light does not throw glare across the print.
- If players are sharing a card, agree where it will sit before the first Charleston.
- Try the card flat before buying a holder.
You probably do not need another accessory. A holder is worth considering only if it solves a real readability or space problem.
Use the mahjong mat size guide if you also need to check the usable table space.
Does every player need a card?
Ask the host how the table handles cards. A shared card can work for a demonstration, but passing one reference around can slow a regular game. If you are buying for a group, confirm the player count and size preference before placing a multi-card order.
Do not buy a bundle just because a marketplace listing defaults to four cards. Start with the number your group asked for.
Can you buy the NMJL card on Amazon or from another store?
Yes, third-party listings exist. They can make sense when you need tracked shipping, local pickup, or a specific delivery window. They also require more checking than the league's own store.
Before buying, verify all five:
- Publisher or source: the listing should clearly identify the National Mah Jongg League card.
- Year: the title and order option should show the year your group uses.
- Size: standard, large print, and larger formats are not interchangeable at a crowded table.
- Quantity: some listings are bundles, not single cards.
- Seller and delivery: check who sells it, who fulfills it, and the delivery date shown for your address.
Skip listings that use phrases such as "official revision" without clearly identifying the publisher, or that mix several years and sizes on one page without a clear selected option.
This guide does not link to a marketplace listing. Add one only when the exact year, size, quantity, seller, and destination have been checked at publish time.
What if you need the card before your next game?
Do not guess from a generic "in stock" message. Compare the delivery date shown for your address, ask the host whether a local instructor or shop has official cards, and confirm whether the table can lend you one for the first game.
A fast but unclear listing is not better than the correct card arriving later. If the year, size, or quantity is ambiguous, skip it.
Keep the card separate from the equipment list
The card is the rules reference. It does not replace tiles, racks, pushers, dice, scoring pieces, a mat, or a table.
After you settle the card:
- Inventory the exact box contents.
- Confirm the racks and pushers your group expects.
- Measure the usable table, not just its outside dimensions.
- Buy only what is missing.

NMJL card questions
Can I use last year's NMJL card?
Only if the host is intentionally using that edition. The league says its standard-hands cards change annually, so do not bring an older card and assume the table will match it.
Does buying a card include NMJL membership?
The official mail-order form places the card order under a membership year. Confirm the current terms on the official order page rather than relying on an old summary or a third-party listing.
Is a large-print card different from the standard card?
Treat it as a format choice, not a different rules edition. Confirm the same year and the current dimensions on the official store.
Can I print or copy the card?
Use the official card. MahjongSetup does not reproduce card scans, hands, or card text.
Is the NMJL card an Amazon affiliate product on this page?
The official-store link should remain the primary path and is not an Amazon recommendation. A marketplace link should appear only when its exact year, size, quantity, and seller have been checked.
